Comeback (廻天, Kaiten) is the tenth episode of Shenmue the Animation. It first premiered on Crunchyroll and Adult Swim on April 10th, 2022.

Plot[]

Right after Ryo leaves the Man Mo Temple, he reluctantly joins up with Ren who gives him a tip on where to find Yuanda Zhu. Their tip, however, leads them to a trap laid by the leader of the Yellow Heads Dou Niu who captures them and handcuffs them together.

Summary[]

In her household, Shenhua greets her father who informs her that he'll be away for a long period of time on an important job. Later, Shenhua watches as her father heads off and then admires the flowers blossoming on the tree outside of her house.

After Ryo leaves the temple, he runs into Wong who informs him that Ren is waiting for him. Lead inside Ren's lair, Wong leaves, and Ren asks him what he'll do after he finds Yuanda Zhu as he's an elusive yet high-ranking figure in the underworld. Ryo answers that he'll use the letter that he sent his father. The moment Ryo pulls it out he drops a photo of his father and Yuanda in front of Ren, who surmises that the men are his father and his target interest. Furthermore, despite Ryo's refusal to answer what he'll do after he meets with Yuanda, Ren is still interested in the "score" that the Phoenix Mirror has. Ren then leads Ryo to an acquaintance of his named Yang who once worked with Yuanda.

In Kowloon, they meet Yang who after Ryo shows him his father's message, gives them specific instructions to greet a man in black with a special password. They follow these instructions, but when they're led to a room where Yuanda is supposedly in, Ren stays behind as he says the man they spoke to signals another man, which has him on high alert. Inside the room where Yuanda is supposed to be, Ryo is ambushed by two members of the Yellow Heads he encountered before along with their leader. Before the group could harm Ryo, Ren breaks into the room and KOs the two members. The two then face off against Dou Niu, but are incapacitated by the giant brute and are taken to what is assumed to be a room in the Yellow Heads lair. Now handcuffed together, Ren informs Ryo of the Yellow Head's background of how they came into power. After this, they manage to trick and overpower their guard to escape the compound, but are unable to uncuff themselves.

Outside, the two have a heart to heart about Ryo's goals and who he's after, specifically Lan Di, who Ren is aware of. Meanwhile, Lan Di is met by Dou Niu and his subordinate Yuan who lets it slip that they caught two people who may have information on Yuanda Zhu. Dou Niu scolds Yuan for mentioning impertinent information involving Ren and some "Japanese kid". Moving forward, Yuan asks if they successfully complete their mission, the Yellow Heads will be affiliated with the Chi You Men. Lan Di confirms it and then a member of the Yellow Heads arrives to inform them that Ren has escaped. Afterward, Ren and Ryo try and take the elevator up, but are confronted by Yuan instead. Once Yuan was dealt with, Dou Niu arrives in the other elevator and goes on a rampage against the two. In the end, they manage to escape and the following day Wong unlocks their cuffs in his boathouse while Joy. Ren mentions that the Yellow Heads are now after them, which irks Joy. Afterward, both Ryo and Ren interrogate Yang for information on Yuanda and he suggests seeking out Huang. They then visit Huang's Room and find some of his tapes and back at Ren's place they plan on listening to all of them in hopes of finding a clue to Zhu's whereabouts.

Elsewhere, Xiuying Hong recalls her final moments with her brother Ziming Hong. Eventually, one of the tapes involving a conversation between Yuan and Dou Niu mentions Zhu's name including a name of an acquaintance, Shuqin Zhang who they have in their captivity. Following a clue left in the tape, they visit a bird shop, where they learn from the owner and proprietor that Yuan is a regular there. From there, they stake the place out until Yuan arrives and purchases some bird seeds for his bird and tail him back to his room. Both Ren and Ryo then take out Yuan so they could rescue Zhang, but Dou Niu was fast approaching. Using the bird's mimicking skills, Ryo and Ren manage to lock Dou Niu in the closet and rescue Zhang. At a safe location, Zhang explains that he's managed to get in contact with Zhu and that he's currently living in the Ghost Hall Building. Not wanting to waste any time, Ren suggests they leave, but before they go Shuqin gives them some keys each representing one of the four saint beasts, and requests that Zhu be kept safe.

Infiltrating the building, they manage to finally find Zhu only to find out that they've been tailed by both Yuan and Dou Niu. Ren escapes out of a window, but Ryo stays behind and is overpowered out the window by Dou Niu and lands on a roof below. Dou then tries to confront Ryo, but is stopped by the sudden appearance of Xiuying.
