Future (嚮後, Kyōgo) is the seventh episode of Shenmue the Animation. It first premiered on Crunchyroll and Adult Swim on March 20th, 2022.
Plot[]
Ryo finally meets with Lishao who deems him unworthy and suggests that he return to his country, however, thanks to the monk Hanhui, Ryo visits a Martial Arts School to learn Wude. However, the grandmaster refuses to teach Ryo Wude due to him not being worthy of doing so. Not wanting to give up on his endeavor, Ryo learns from Joy about a street performer who is also a martial artist and this ropes Ryo into the local underworld group, the Yellow Heads.
Summary[]
Ryo finally meets Lishao Tao, in fact, the woman he met there a couple of days. To prove her identity, Ryo spars against Lishao, and is easily overpowered by her. Once she releases him from her grip, Xiuying requests that Ryo leave the country as she cannot help him.
As Ryo exits the Man Mo Temple, a young girl named Fangmei disparages Ryo, but is then told off by Hanhui. After Ryo talks with Hanhui about his misjudgment of Lishao, the monk suggests that Ryo go to the Guang Martial Arts School to learn the remaining principles of Wude. By dusk, Ryo reaches the place, but the two sword-wielding guards stop him from entering. The grandmaster of the place Zhoushan Xuan, however, allows him to enter and talk with Ryo in his room. When asked why he was there, Ryo answers that he wants to learn Wude, however, Zhoushan cannot teach him about the art because he once ruined a man's life because of it.
The next day, at Aberdeen, Ryo is met by Joy as he seeks a skilled martial artist in the way of Wude. Joy points Ryo to a performer at the Golden Shopping Mall who handily beat a bunch of thugs. Ryo visits the place and finds a homeless person laying on a mat, who asks if he's affiliated with the Yellow Heads, but then asks where he's from and Ryo answers Japan. The man then asks for Ryo to fetch him a beer and when Ryo does the man drinks it and then advertises Ryo as a martial artist from Japan who'll break a rock in half. Despite Ryo's hesitance, he does this and helps earn the man some cash. Thankful for Ryo's help, the man introduces himself as Zongquan and tries to start a partnership with him. On the other hand, Ryo declines the offer and asks to learn Wude from him. Zongquan declines claiming he's inadequate in doing so, which Ryo claims the grandmaster also told him that same line. Upon learning this Zongquan gives Ryo his cut and leaves the scene.
Elsewhere, Joy rides her motorcycle until a knife is thrown into the road which causes her to stop. The knife was thrown by Ren and he tells Joy that he heard from Wong about a man from Japan is around those parts looking for someone. Joy then informs Ren of the same information that he gave Ryo, who was back at the martial arts temple relaying what he heard from Zongquan. Zhoushan then elaborates his past and relationship with Zongquan and to his own confession, how he was forced to banish his student due to his misuse of what he learned.
Afterward, Ryo visits the mall again seeking out Zongquan, but finds that he wasn't there. It's then that Ryo is confronted by several members of the Yellow Head gang, and as he manages to defend himself against them, Zongquan appears and defeats them. The two then flee the scene, and they unknowingly run past Ren on their way.
At the Man Mo Temple, Lishao is approached by Fangmei who informs her that the outside of the temple and her room were cleaned. Back at the mall, Ren eavesdrops on a conversation between the police and a witness of Ryo and Zongquan's fight against the Yellow Heads. The two in question sat on a bench and Zongquan told Ryo about the Yellow Heads, who, in turn, tells him what he learned about his past with his old master. With that out of the way, Zongquan starts to sell some old books from the bench.
That night, Ryo learns that he has to start paying at the hotel he's staying at, and from his room, Joy offers him some dinner. They eat someplace and Joy asks him if he's met anyone interesting as of late. Ryo answers that he's met the guy that Joy referred him to and a group known as the Yellow Heads. She also offers him a piece of advice where "cats don't reveal their claws in the open". Recalling some things between Zongquan and Zhoushan, Ryo pays for his food and heads off to the Golden Shopping Mall where Zongquan was facing off against the Yellow Head Gang. Ryo claims that Zongquan is still adhering to his martial arts creed, but he claims that all he's doing is horsing around with the gang. Amused by this, the leader orders his men to withdraw, but claims that they'll meet again soon. With the Yellow Heads gone and after learning how Ryo knew about how he was holding back, Zongquan requests that he deliver his old master a letter.
The following day, Ryo delivers Zongquan's letter to Zhoushan and when he reads it, Zhoushan claims that the letter was an allegory for one of the Wude principles Jie. Later, Ryo visits Lishao and claims that him not knowing the ways of Jie made her reject giving him any help. Lishao confirms this and claims that's not the only reason why she refused and that she still refuses to help him. Ryo, however, also refuses to give up, hence Lishao has Ryo follow her to her room where he'll stay and gives him her real name as well: Xiuying Hong.
