Gaowen Xia (Hànzì: 夏 高文, Pinyin: Xià Gāo Wén, On'yomi: Ka Kōbun) is a third-generation Chinese who is the grandson of Xiuyu Xia, the owner of the Russiya China Shop in Dobuita, Yokosuka, Japan in the game Shenmue.
Biography[]
Gaowen is the first grandson of Xiuyu. He was born in Yokohama and is a third generation Chinese living in Japan. He is the only son of Xiuyu's son Shunwen Xia. Since he was born and grew up in Japan, he doesn't think of himself as Chinese but speaks Chinese and Xiuyu encourages him to use it daily. Although he cries easily, he's a nice and friendly child who plays with anyone. He's a bit envious of other children who have brothers and sister, so he attempts to influence his parents by constantly saying, "I want a baby sister" at every opportunity.
Gaowen's parents are currently residing in the United States on business, so Xiuyu is taking care of her him. She loves the boy deeply, and spoils him, but is strict about teaching him manners and proper conduct.
Shenmue[]
Ryo Hazuki saved Gaowen from Charlie Grant and his henchmen at Sakuragaoka, so he now inspires to grow big and strong like Ryo. If Ryo approaches Gaowen across from Komine Bakery after saving him, he will refer Ryo to his grandmother for assistance in translating the Chinese letter sent to his father.
Shenmue the Animation[]

Gaowen appears in Shenmue the Animation. In Episode 2, Charlie takes his soccer ball from him and Ryo helps him get it back for him. At the beginning of Episode 3, Ryo approaches Xiuyu's shop and sees that it's closed, then Gaowen thanks him for helping him and wonders why he's headed to their home. He soon learns that Gaowen is Xiuyu's grandson and she thanks Ryo for helping him.
