The Notebook is a notepad owned by Ryo Hazuki and is a feature in the Shenmue series to help the player out with clues. Every time a new event or a general chat happens a sound pops up to inform the player. The first Shenmue had a list of telephone numbers for the player to ring up. The phone numbers got replaced in Shenmue II of a recap of the first story and got expanded to include jobs and gambling outlets.
In Shenmue III, Ryo has a new Notebook with more advanced features. He can place photographs of interest inside. It also has various illustrations including a map of Bailu Village and Niaowu. Like in the first Shenmue, the notepad also has a list of phone numbers Ryo can call at Hotel Niaowu. There is also a tab dedicated to the Requests available in the game.
