Shenmue Side Story is a 4-part comic that incorporates Chapter 2 of the Shenmue series. Naturally, it takes place between Shenmue and Shenmue II. It was included as an unlockable in the 2002 Xbox version of Shenmue II and it's re-release Shenmue I & II by taking snapshots of certain characters in the game.
The comics can be viewed by entering the "Secret" section of the snapshot menu. In the 2002 Xbox version, this can be done by pressing X three times and in the re-release there is conveniently a tab for it on the left side of the menu. There will be several pages that show thumbnails of the characters that you need to take photos of, and on the lower right corner of each page, there is a "present" icon which is were the comics can be viewed. Completing one page of characters will unlock one comic. However, the last two pages of characters unlock some artwork rather than comics.

Vol. 1 - Guizhang & Joy[]

- Joy: Found in various cutscenes throughout the whole game, and sometimes appears in free quest in Aberdeen, Wan Chai, and Kowloon.
- Wong: Found in various cutscenes and events throughout the whole game.
- Sam: Found in various cutscenes and events at the real beginning of the game and at the time where Ryo is looking for Ren and when he meets him and during the chase scene with him. He can also be found in free quest at Beverly Hills Wharf (If Ryo does not have $500 or more when Sam demands it to meet Ren) and in Kowloon.
- Larry: Found in various cutscenes and events at the real beginning of the game and at the time where Ryo is looking for Ren and when he meets him and during the chase scene with him. - Cool Z: Found in various cutscenes and events at the real beginning of the game and at the time where Ryo is looking for Ren and when he meets him and during the chase scene with him, and in cutscenes in Kowloon. He can also be found in free quest at Beverly Hills Wharf (If Ryo does not have $500 or more when Sam demands it to meet Ren) and in Kowloon.
- Ailian He: A fortuneteller found in free quest at the real beginning of the game at the ship arrival dock. She can also be found at Hermit Fortunetellers in the Green Market Quarter, Wan Chai or Blackness Fortunetellers in the Dancing Dragon Building, Stand Quarter, Kowloon.
- Haohui Du: One of the Poison Brothers found in a cutscene at the beginning of the game and during a QTE battle with him and his brother when performing the Chawan Sign at Ling Ling Porridge on Queen's Street, Aberdeen, the Canton Cafe in the Green Market Quarter, Wan Chai or the Fu Jian Tea Shop in the Lucky Charm Quarter, Wan Chai. He also can be found in free quest at Ling Ling Porridge.
- Bangzhuo Du: One of the Poison Brothers found in a cutscene at the beginning of the game and during a QTE battle with him and his brother when performing the Chawan Sign at Ling Ling Porridge on Queen's Street, Aberdeen, the Canton Cafe in the Green Market Quarter, Wan Chai or the Fu Jian Tea Shop in the Lucky Charm Quarter, Wan Chai. - Xiuying Hong: Found in various cutscenes and events in Wan Chai and Kowloon. She also can be found in free quest, when she is taking Ryo to her room at the Da Yuan Apartments.
- Jianmin Tao: Found in Lotus Park in the South Carmain Quarter, Wan Chai.
- Zhoushan Xuan: Found at the Guang Martial Arts School in the Green Market Quarter, Wan Chai.
- Zhangyu Kong: Found at Zhangyu Barber's Shop, Lucky Charm Quarter, Wan Chai when Ryo is trying to learn the four wude up until the time Ryo leaves for Kowloon.
- Guixiang Lee: Found in various cutscenes and events when Ryo is looking for Lishao Tao and during the time Ryo learns about the Chawan Sign and is performing the sign to find an associate of Yuanda Zhu. She also can be found in free quest at the Yan Tin Apartments in the South Carmain Quarter, Wan Chai after Ryo learns her name and becomes an ally of her's.
- Ren Dan: Found at the Come Over Guest House, Green Market Quarter, Wan Chai.
- Zongquan Bai: Found at the Golden Shopping Mall, Golden Quarter, Wan Chai.
- Meiming Yu: A young girl wearing a panda shirt at the Fu Hoi Diner, Worker's Pier, Aberdeen.
Vol. 3 - Xiuying & Ziming[]

- Fangmei Xun: Found in various cutscenes and events after Ryo stays at Xiuying's Room for the first time and before he leaves for Kowloon. She can also be found in free quest in Scarlet Hills, the Wise Men's Quarter, and the Lucky Charm Quarter. She also can be found in a cutscene after Ryo leaves Kowloon if the player completes the "Fangmei Birthday Event".
- Jiliang Chang: One of the apprentices found in Man Mo Temple, Scarlet Hills, Wan Chai.
- Shiquan Fu: One of the apprentices found in Man Mo Temple, Scarlet Hills, Wan Chai.
- Hanhui Liu: Found in Man Mo Temple. Scarlet Hills, Wan Chai. He also can be found in a cutscene after Ryo leaves Kowloon.
- Anan Liu: Found mostly staring at a crooked sign in the Green Market Quarter, Wan Chai.
- Delin Hong: Ryo's co-worker when carrying crates at Fortune's Pier, Aberdeen. He can also be found in free quest at Fortune's Pier, Aberdeen.
- Mingzhen Ye: Found at the Guang Martial Arts School, Green Market Quarter, Wan Chai.
- Linjian Chuan: Found at the Guang Martial Arts School, Green Market Quarter, Wan Chai.
Vol. 4 - Ryo & Chai[]

- Eileen M. Edelweiss: Found at Pigeon Park, Worker's Pier, Aberdeen after Ryo stays at Xiuying's room for the first time. After Ryo meets her and Izumi and obtains the Big Bronze Medal, she can be found in a free battle at Pine Game Arcade, Golden Quarter, Wan Chai. Also after Ryo meets her, she can be found in various cutscenes and events in Wan Chai and Aberdeen.
- Izumi Takano: Found working at the Tomato Convenience Store, Golden Quarter, Wan Chai. She also appears in various cutscenes and events after Ryo meets her and Eileen and obtains the Big Bronze Medal.
- Gongjue Zhou: Found at the real beginning of the game at the ship arrival dock. He also can be found buying capsule toys or around pawnshops in Wan Chai and Kowloon.
- Yang: Found at Great View Herbs, Great View Building, Thousand White Quarter, Kowloon.
- Kai: Found playing the Chinese violin on Dragon Street, Kowloon. He can also be found in a cutscene in Room 503 of the Moon Child Building after Ryo gets a note to go there when performing the Chawan Sign in Kowloon.
- Haoyi Ping: Found at the Lucky Hit Museum, Dimsum Quarter, Kowloon.
- Guangyan Wang: Found on the top floor of the Yan Tin Apartments in the South Carmain Quarter, Wan Chai.
