The Sword Handguard (刀の鍔 Katana no Tsuba) is an item Ryo Hazuki receives in the game Shenmue. The item is also available in his inventory from the start of the games Shenmue II and Shenmue III.
Shenmue[]
The Sword Handguard is a Hazuki Family heritage that is passed down to the Hazuki Family members on their 18th birthday and has the Hazuki Family crest on it. The crest itself is composed of a snow ring, two stars, and a sword.
Before Iwao Hazuki's death, he had given it to Keizo Oishi of Bunkado Antiques to store and polish it for him. Once Ryo Hazuki obtains it from Bunkado Antiques, hoping for it to be the Phoenix Mirror, he ends up finding out that the sword handguard together with a sword found in the Hazuki Dojo, form part of a key which opens up the secret entrance to a hidden basement underneath the Dojo. In the basement, Ryo finds the Phoenix Mirror.
Shenmue the Animation[]
The Sword Handguard at Bunkado Antiques in the anime.
Ryo recieves the Sword Handguard at Bunkado Antiques in Shenmue the Animation Episode 3. He inserts it in the slot at the Hazuki Dojo, which grants him access to the Hazuki Residence Basement like in the game.
Trivia[]
- It is possible to insert the sword into the slot in the Hazuki Dojo before Ryo obtains the Sword Handguard, but it is impossible to insert the Sword Hanguard into the slot to access the Hazuki Residence Basement early, since Ryo recieves it at Bunkado Antiques later in the story. It is possible to insert the Sword Handguard before Ryo recieves it by adding it to your inventory early through Action Replay/Gameshark codes and modding, however the game will crash.
