This talking myna bird (九官鳥 Kyūkanchō) is Yuan's pet. He keeps it in a cage in his room which is located on the 4th floor of the Golden Flower Building in the Stand Quarter, Kowloon, Hong Kong in the game Shenmue II.
Shenmue II[]
Yuan gets the best type of bird feed for his bird from the Nine Birds Shop and the owner of the shop Yingzhi Tian, considers him to be a special customer. Yuan cares deeply for his bird, and even threatened to feed Yingzhi to dogs if he didn't get his bird feed when he wanted it.
This bird repeats anything anyone says, and Wuying Ren used this to his and Ryo Hazuki's advantage to trick Dou Niu and escape from him when he was heading to Yuan's room when they were rescuing Shuqin Zhang from there who was captured by Yuan.
Besides Yuan, the other people in Kowloon that own these type of birds are Chen of the Electronic Goods Shop and Jin who has three of them.
Shenmue the Animation[]

The bird also appears in Shenmue the Animation Episode 10, and it's role is very identical to how it is in the game. The main difference is that when Yuan goes into his room with the birdfeed, he says "I'm back, sweetie!" to it and shows it the bag of birdfeed. The bird then repeats "I'm back! I'm back!".
